The AI evolution has already infiltrated many aspects of our everyday lives. In recent years, AI continue to roll out with applications that we can’t even expect.

Self-driving cars are a good example of AI. They use many sensors and data to navigate and drive. Other examples are voice assistants like Siri, speech recognition software, and basically all types of automations.

According to the uses, there are two kinds of artificial intelligence:

Strong AI

This is capable of all the activities that humans can do. It requires that the computer must have a program that knows about the world (like all the moves in chess).

Weak AI

This is a type of AI system designed to complete specific tasks. Virtual personal assistants, such as Apple’s Siri, are examples of weak AI systems.

​For example, Siri accesses a database of nearby businesses and provides driving directions. Google’s algorithms also use AI to adjust the search results based on keywords.

Machine learning technology is the backbone of AI. It includes deep learning and neural networks.
Machine learning focuses on the development of algorithms that can learn from data. It is the process where a computer program improves on a specific task by analyzing input data.

In the last few years, machine learning helps in a lot of different ways in technology. For example, computer vision can recognize images and speech recognition can process audio.

The learning process involves two steps: training and testing.

AI Evolution in Training

It is the process of presenting examples to the algorithm so that it can learn from them.

For example, if you want to teach a computer how to recognize cats, you would show it a lot of pictures of cats. The more examples you give the computer, the better it will be able to recognize cats in new images.

AI Evolution in Testing

It is the process of evaluating how well the algorithm performs on new data.

Practically, it means that if you want to teach a computer how to recognize a cat, you first need to give it pictures of cats. Then, the computer looks at all the pictures and learns what a cat looks like.

History of AI Evolution

The history of AI goes back to a Greek myth about a sculptor named Hephaestus. He created automatons that could move and speak. After that, people dreamt of finally creating machines that can think for themselves.

In 1950, Alan Turing published a paper that kick-started artificial intelligence research. The paper was “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”.

In his publication, he introduced a test for artificial intelligence, also known as the Turing test to the general public. It was all about considering the question, ‘Can machines think?’. This question became the starting point to modern AI evolution.

In 1955, John McCarthy was the first person to use the term “Artificial Intelligence” at a conference. He organized this conference to discuss and clarify ideas about thinking machines.

The first computer came into existence in 1956. Then, scientists were able to write programs that mimicked human thought and reasoning. But they wondered if they could ever create AI that had the power to think on its own as humans do. After that, the era of advanced technology and artificial intelligence came into existence.

Generations Of AI

The first generation of AI was ‘Symbolic AI’. At that time, computer programs were to solve problems using logic and rules. For example, if you wanted the computer to learn chess, you would program it with the rules of chess.

The second generation of AI was ‘Sub-symbolic AI’. This is when computers programs were to solve problems using machine learning. For example, if you wanted a computer to learn chess, you would program it to learn using simulations.

Artificial Intelligence is a term that appeared around quite a bit in recent years. It has permeated every aspect of technology and is a driving force behind the future. Almost every major tech company is working on AI solutions in some capacity.

How many times do you come across AI in a day? You see it in your alarm clock, search engine, Facebook suggestions, android keypad. Also, you are here on my AI blog due to the same reason.

Due to the AI Evolution, it is going to be a bigger part of our lives as more and more companies use it in their products. Finally, it will not only make our lives easier but also more efficient and interesting.

One of the applications of AI is neural networks. Neural networks help in detecting images and videos. For example, Facebook uses it to stop the spread of terrorist propaganda. Neural networks also help to analyze natural language and text, even online reviews.

Many businesses are making use of artificial intelligence in different ways. Many companies have finally built personal AI systems for their business like Alexa. But, there are also many that have used AI to enhance the products and services they already offer. Here are some examples of companies utilizing AI today:

  • Travelocity: They use AI to help with flight scheduling and ticketing. They also use bots to answer customer questions 24/7.
  • Intuit: It is a tax preparation software company. It has a virtual assistant called Lucy that helps people file taxes.
  • Zillow: They use chatbots to offer personalized housing advice to potential home buyers.
  • The Economist: They have a Facebook Messenger bot. The bot delivers news alerts, market data, and podcasts.
  • USAA: They have a chatbot that helps members make travel arrangements.
  • Salesforce: This is a CRM company. It has a chatbot called Einstein that helps users find answers to their questions.
  • IBM: They use a bot called Watson in the medical field to assist doctors in making decisions. Watson scans a patient’s medical history to identify possible treatments for their condition. The system can also recommend which treatment is most likely to be effective; etc.

Future of AI Evolution

Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic for a while now, and it’s only getting hotter. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, AI is finding its way into every aspect of our lives. But, where is all this hard work taking us?

This is the question asked by many but no one have a correct and factful answer for this. So, we can be only dependent on current trend and some future prediction.

Currently, the trick to gain insight into the future of artificial intelligence is to look at what is going on today. According to Gartner, we’ve already seen chatbots, virtual assistants. And that’s only the needle in the stack of AI. We are yet to see surprises by AI as we see in movies like flying vehicles, spaceships, and much more.

For instance, when Elon Musk speaks, people listen. So, when he tell that artificial intelligence is the greatest threat, we need to take action. This is how we can use this technology in a safe environment and make it future-proof.

Now the question arises is how do we make sure that these AI decision-makers are safe, ethical, and smart?
The answer lies in three things – human oversight, the data we train them on, and accountability.

AI Evolution in Human Oversight

The human element is key to making sure that AI is safe, ethical, and smart. This means human involvement is crucial at every step of the decision-making process.

Often, this will mean that humans will need to involve in the training of AI systems. For example, a human may need to tell an AI system what is it should consider “normal behavior” and what it should not.

The data we train them on

The data we train AI systems on is critical to making sure they are safe, ethical, and smart. For example, if we train the AI system on biased data, it will likely make biased decisions.

Data used to train AI systems can come from many sources, including the following:

  • Data generated by humans (e.g., photos on social media)
  • Data generated by sensors (e.g., images and video from drones
  • Data generated by machines (e.g., data from sensors in industrial machines)
  • Data generated by software (e.g., logs of system behavior)
  • Data generated by humans and machines together (e.g., social media posts with photos)

Accountability

A commitment to accept responsibility for one’s actions and decisions. This is the key that will unlock the door to safe AI. This means if an AI makes any decision, we can trace back its reasoning and understand why it made that decision.

The best way to do so is to have a process of series of checks and balances in place. We should also run the AI system’s reasoning based on the above series. This means we should have humans involved in the working loop at all times. They should ask questions and make sure that the AI system is not making biased or unfair decisions.
